Introducing Our New Obedience Trainer
My name is Bev DeChon. I have always loved dogs but never had one growing up.When my husband and I bought our 1st house I wanted 2 things... a BBQ grill and a dog. I showed up on moving day with a brand new grill and 2 dogs! That was 15 years ago and my love and fascination with dogs has done nothing but grow.
I have worked off and on at Kaos Kennel since 2004 caring for the dogs. I started to get more into training in 2008 when we had a litter of puppies that we donated to Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota. Two things happened at that time. The first is I felt the need to start poking my nose around at HSDM so I could see how the puppies were doing and the more I poked around the more I got sucked into what they were doing and wanted to be a part of it. The other thing that happened was during a delicate fear phase in puppies something scared one of the puppies that we donated and this flipped a switch in his brain that made him afraid of everything so he was returned to us.
When Stetson was returned I wanted to do everything I could to get him over his fear so I started attending as many classes with him as I could, taught by as many different people possible. We went to lots of obedience classes and also took classes in agility and freestyle (dancing with your dog). Stetson is doing so much better and with all his skills from all the classes he has become my best training assistant for the many service dogs that come thru my house. There is a saying "you don’t always get the dog you want but you usually get the dog you need". That certainly was true with Stetson! Not only did I become more confident but I also learned so much about the many different training methods and tools there are.
My involvement with HSDM (Name later changed to Can Do Canines) has been very rewarding and I have learned so much along the way. I have fostered dogs, been a puppy raiser, fostered litters of puppies born into their program, worked with clients, assisted with classes and interviewed and trained new fosters. I have learned so many neat things there but the bottom line is usually...our dogs want to please us. They just need some direction on how to do that.
I have a toolbox full of tricks and tools for training dogs. I have found that what works great on one dog may not work so great with the next. I use lots of positive reinforcement and play to get the results I want. I look forward to each new challenge and the opportunity to love and work with your dog!
